Casey’s Inn –The Lautenbach Years

I’m not a historian, but I am a writer, and the Egg Harbor Historical Society asked me to do a speaking engagement. I titled the presentation, “Casey’s Inn – The Lautenbach Years”, and presented the program to over 100 people on Sunday, March 6th, 2016. A public reception followed from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Bertschinger Center (adjacent to the Egg Harbor post office). My talk included an exhibit of photos, recipes and memorabilia.

For one hour I featured the years my grandparents, and my father and uncle, and their wives, and children maintained a Door County gathering spot known as Casey’s Inn, located on Highway 42, in Egg Harbor, WI.

Following the days of operation by August “Casey” Lautenbach, and his wife, Leila (nee: LeRoy), my father, Lester L. (Lyle), and his brother, Donald G. (George) operated the establishment for over 40 years.  Their partnership was maintained through a division of labor: one brother handling the bar, and the other the restaurant. Both could cross over, and did. They worked side-by-side, all those years. Their wives: one Helen M. (Margaret) worked the stove at night, and the other Helen J. (Jean), was a waitress.  Their children, seven in total, did everything from working the shoots, to washing dishes, to waitressing, bartending, and any odd job that came along. I was one of those kids.

The presentation included some facts and figures, some dates, but more importantly, it put a shine on the characters and the stories of the place . . . during The Lautenbach Years.  Audience participation was anticipated, and proved to add extra memories of that special place I called home.

At the end of the talk, I used the closing line from the bar, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”

Enjoy each precious memory. You’ll quickly discover–one memory leads to another. Write them down. Share your stories.

INSPIRATION during National Poetry Month

I have a stamp that reads: Create Something New Every Day.  I try to live up to that philosophy.   One year I kept a journal of poems, one poem each day, mostly haiku.  Another year I knit every day — a little in the morning, or a little something at night. Each of those commitments helped me to create a nice body of work in those areas of my creative exploration.

This year as I’m doing more purging and merging of files, household items, and literally cleaning house, I ran across that journal of poems, and decided I would try that idea again.  In the journal were some quotes sprinkled throughout the pages, and some days they would serve as the point to jump off, dive into the blank page.  Other days, all I had to do was look out a window: watch a squirrel hide his stash;  follow a bird’s flight pattern; or consider what I was cooking up for dinner and why I had selected that food, that recipe. Some writers think they need to set up a special pen, a certain notebook, or a special place in order to commit to paper.  I can write in a crowded noisy restaurant, as well as a safe desk.  The challenge is not when to write, but what to write, and what to write upon. My collection grows when I make the choice to be inspired daily.  So, I keep a file of quotes or other prompts. I randomly select one each day, and start writing.

And today, I’m acting on another idea that I’ve contemplated for a couple of years — writing on my own blog.    For you reader, no more excuses, find a daily inspiration that works for you.
